When I was writing about YVR’s spotters’ picnic (May 2018), I thought about the enjoyment I’ve gotten out of plane spotting and aviation photography. I first started taking photos back in 2004 when I was 11; this was also the year I was introduced to Airliners.net. Once I realized I could save pictures to my parent’s computer, I quickly filled up their hard drive with photos of Air Canada, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and many other carriers. Once I got my own laptop, I was easily distracted at school by the draw of a new “Airport Overview” or “Colorful Paint Scheme” photo on Airliners.net; I dreamed of having my photos one day accepted by the website.
Once I learned that I could submit my own photos on MyAviation.net, a sister site to Airliners, I was instantly hooked. I was addicted to checking the view counter and the comment section to see what people were saying about my photos. Once the site shut down I turned to Flickr for a period of time. When I returned to Calgary in the fall of 2014, University became my number one priority; my Flickr account was basically abandoned.
When I started EHviation in the fall of 2016, I was committed to finding a use for all the photos I had taken over the years. Since then, I’ve strived to use my own photos (to the best of my limitations) for my posts; its something that I’ve advertised to you and something I’m proud of. I hope you enjoy my selection for 2018!
